When to Be There

Writing Center appointments start at the top of the hour

  • If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will forfeit your appointment and need to reschedule.
  • The Writing Center is located at 314 Bryan Hall (the building behind the amphitheater)

Athletics appointments start at the bottom of the hour (7:30 and 8:30)

  • Again, if you are more than 10 minutes late, you will forfeit your appointment and need to reschedule.
  • JPJ Arena appointments are held in the JPJ study hall; check with the coordinators if you have questions
  • McCue appointments are held in the hall just through the entrance of McCue. The tutors are set up at two tables in the hall.

Standing Appointment

The appointment you make at the beginning of the semester will be the same appointment for each week you have an ENWR standing appointment.

  • Example: You signed up for Thursday 7:30 Blue Week at JPJ; every Blue Week Thursday you should show up for your appointment at JPJ
  • Unless you have a conflict, you don't need to reschedule for Orange or Blue week

Remember:

  • If you are more than 10 minutes late for your appointment, you will need to reschedule.
  • The four standing appointments for ENWR 105, and the two for ENWR 106, must be kept in order to get credit for the course.
  • If you miss an appointment, you need to reschedule within a week, or risk getting no credit for the course.

What to Bring

  • Any assignment that your instructor has given you for that week;
  • If you don't have an assignment for that week, a draft of an ENWR paper you are working on;
  • If you are not currently working on a paper, bring in a completed draft of your most recent paper or one you want to revise;
  • If you do not bring in something to work on, you can either work on outlining your next project with your tutor and go over the parts of argument handouts available at all locations, or you will have to reschedule your appointment and bring in some work next time.

Remember:

  • You need to reschedule missed appointments within a week.
  • Only ENWR material can be worked on during regular standing ENWR appointments
  • Just be sure to bring in some ENWR-related material to work on, and you'll be okay

What to Do

  • Explain to your tutor what it is you're working on and what your goal is for the session
    • Goals might be working on claims, making sure reasons follow from the global claim, the evidence is appropriate, etc.
  • Take notes; your tutor is there to help you learn to recognize the parts of your arguments and develop them, but not to write them for you
  • If you are between assignments and do not have something immediately at hand, ask your tutor questions about the parts of argument that you may have and work on coming to grips with them. There are handouts in each booth at the Writing Center, and stored at both McCue and JPJ that go over the different parts of an argument. You can start with that and work towards outlining a future essay.
