Assignment for D1 Essay
Here you are, finishing up your first year at UVa; you've accumulated a lot of wisdom in one short year. You've probably made some mistakes, and you've certainly also done many things right. For this assignment, you will try to help an incoming UVa first-year student to have a successful first year.
- Decide whom you are writing to--not to Generic UVa Student, but someone more specific. If you are a student-athlete, perhaps imagine you are writing to an incoming student-athlete; if you are an international student, perhaps imagine you are writing to an international student; if you are from rural southwestern Virginia, imagine you are writing to someone from rural southwestern Virginia; if you are a Muslim student, imagine you are writing to a Muslim student.
- Decide what you want to convince this student to DO and NOT TO DO. Please, please, please, discard the first three ideas that come to mind--for example, "time management," "be organized," "take advantage of the resources." First-years are going to hear about those things from their advisors--I want you to think of some things that are not so obvious but that turned out to be just as important (or even more important). Perhaps try to think of things that NO ONE told you and you wish someone had.
Keep in mind this essay must take the form of an argument; you are trying to persuade your reader to believe you. So don't forget about claims, reasons, evidence, and acknowledgment and response!
