How to Schedule Your Appointment

  • To schedule an appointment during Fall or Spring semesters, call our office between 9AM and 5PM at 434.924.6678.   If you get a recorded message during those hours, please call back in a few minutes.  You can also make an appointment in person by stopping by the office at 314 Bryan Hall.
  • To schedule an appointment during the Summer Session, email the director, Lindsay Wright, at llw9j@virginia.edu.  Summer tutoring begins in June and a schedule of available hours will be posted on our website on June 1st.

Time

  • Each appointment begins at the top of the hour and lasts for 50 minutes.
  • The last appointment of any day is the hour before the Writing Center closes (M-Th 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., F 2 p.m.)
  • If a student is more then 10 minutes late for an appointment, that appointment is considered forfeit and the tutor does not have to hold the session.

Procedures

  • Be sure to bring a draft of your work. If you are taking ENWR 105/106, your instructor will suggest what to work on in session.
  • If you do not bring in any work, the tutor is not obliged to hold the session.
  • The tutor will ask you about your essay (subject, course, length of the essay, when it's due), and ask the student if there is anything in particular the student or the student's instructor is concerned about. The tutor will then read the work and any instructor's comments, and proceed to work with the student on the structure and logic of the argument and
  • At the end of the session, the tutor will offer the student an evaluation form. The form is anonymous, and is used to help the Writing Center streamline its tactics, policies and procedures.
  • If the student wishes to have his/her instructor notified that the student brought work into the Writing Center, we will send out a notice.

Walk-In Appointments

Walk-In Appointments are Currently Suspended

Due to demand for Writing Center services, the walk-in hours have been suspended.

  • However, if an appointment is open or a student does not show up by 10 minutes past the hour, the tutor will help anyone who walks in.

Walk in appointments must start by 15 minutes after the hour.

On Editing

The tutors do not and cannot edit essays for grammar or any other reason. The Writing Center is not an editing service. The tutors will, however, aid students in learning how to construct better arguments. If basic editing is required, the tutor may refer the student to a manual. Some tutors provide outside private tutoring and may provide such services for a fee; all tutoring at the Writing Center is free to UVA students.
